February is Heart Month!! Let’s take care of this amazing muscle that keeps us ticking with exercise, deep calming breaths, and hearty healthy foods!
We all know Oats are good for us and good for the heart. They help to lower cholesterol, give you long sustained energy and keep you fuller longer. But we are not talking about the packaged, instant, high in sugar and stripped of all their good stuff oatmeal. If you want all the great benefits that Oats have to offer you have to eat 100% whole grain oats!
This recipe is creamy, slightly sweet, slightly nutty and DELICIOUS! Plus its packed with Maca powder which gives you a natural energy kick! I use coconut sugar and almond milk to sweeten it a bit. Coconut sugar is 79% sucrose which is good because we want to keep our consumption of Fructose as low as possible. Regular cane sugar is about 50% fructose, coconut sugar is about 3-9% fructose.
Heres what you will need:
1 cup Rolled Oats (I prefer the Trader Joes’ GF Rolled Oats)
1 1/2 cup Almond Milk
1/2 cup water
2tbs. Coconut Sugar
1/2-1 tsp. Maca powder
1-2 tsp. cinnamon powder (to taste)
pinch of sea salt
Place all ingredients in a sauce pan and whisk to blend. Bring to a slow boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-20 minutes. Turn off heat and cover let sit for 2 minutes. Mix with your favorite fruit if desired and top with a sm. handful of nuts. I like mine with banana and either walnuts or pecans :). Makes 2-3 servings. I put leftovers in sm. ball jars in the fridge. Super handy to grab, heat and go.
Enjoy your OATS! Your heart will thank you..
